The retail future of Cheltenham High Street is to be further strengthened by the addition of another large unit at the Regent Arcade.
Hoardings are to go up inside The Regent Arcade shopping centre this week in readiness for work to begin on creating new 13,500 square foot two storey unit at the front of the Arcade.
An agreement is in place with a major high street fashion brand to let the flagship store but no details can be released at this stage for legal reasons.
The centre will remain fully open during the twelve month build with minimal disruption to shoppers as most of the work will be going on behind the scenes.
The development is the third phase of owner Canada Life’s plans to refurbish Cheltenham’s premier retail destination which opened in 1985. Two years ago work was completed on the Regent Arcade’s stylish new Bath stone façade which included two large retail units (MSUs) now let to fashion giants H & M and River Island. National lingerie brand Bravissimo has also moved into the Arcade and Carluccio’s restaurant will be opening in May.
The latest unit will replace the High Street facing shop fronts on the other side of the centre entrance previously occupied by Old Guys Rule, EE and Burger King. The unit will extend as far back as Tiger with Millie’s Cookie’s and Timpson having already relocated to other units elsewhere in the centre to make way for the new MSU.
Said John Forward, centre director at the Regent Arcade: “Having River Island and H & M has made a huge difference to both the Regent Arcade and the High Street. Footfall figures show that the two new stores have definitely brought more people into Cheltenham town centre. The addition of yet another big name can only help to ensure that our high street continues to play its part in contributing to the vibrant and exciting shopping offer that draws visitors to our town.”
